Greenwashing means making a product seem more environmentally friendly than it really is.
Companies and organizations regularly deceitfully pitch goods and policies as environmentally friendly, i.e. by exposing cost cuts as reduction in usage of resources.
The term is normally used when a company or an organization spends more time and money claiming being green, rather than spending it on introducing green practices. This often comes to term when a more naturalistic feeling is given to a product through a name- or label change, i.e. by depicting a tree on a bottle containing harmful chemicals. Environmentalists generally use the term greenwashing to describe the actions of traditionally vast polluting companies.
